November 3, 1348 (You choose date and location based on your research)

Venice,

In a well-written entry, describe what a doctor seeing the plague for the first time saw. Paint a word picture that tells the reader:

     •     What visual symptoms the victim exhibited?

     •     What discomforts the victims complained of?

     •     What the doctor smelled and felt?

     •     If the doctor was scared, confused, angry, mad etc…

November 4, 1348

Florence,

Continue your journal by writing what the doctor believed causes the illness you’re assigned to write about.

Remember to keep your journal historically accurate. Keep in mind that we know what causes the plague today, but depending on what year you are writing from, they may have had different beliefs as to what caused it then. You may be surprised at some of the crazy ideas that were out there.

November 5, 1348

Florence,

Tell your readers what a person, who has contracted your assigned disease, goes through from first signs of illness through death or cure.

Do this from the doctors’ perspective. Be descriptive and factual.

November 6, 1348

Florence,

     •     What is the doctor doing to protect himself from catching the disease?

     •     What is he or she wearing to protect himself or herself?

     •     What preventive measures are they taking in hygiene?

     •     What foods, animals, people and/or places are they avoiding?

November 7, 1348

Florence,

Here, your doctor describes what his surroundings are like.

     •     How many people are dying?

     •     What are those not yet sick doing?

     •     Are they scared? Is your doctor scared?

     •     Is there panic?

     •     Where do the sick go?

     •     What is done with the dead?

     • What is the government doing? Laws?

Conclude this, your final journal entry, with what the doctor would hope for to end the suffering and dying and sign off as if you knew future generations would be reading this journal.

To end this portion of your project, write a well-written summary that includes… (this part doesn’t need to be 250 words)

     •     The number of people that have died from your disease to date.

     •     What we now believe or know causes the disease.

     •     Where it exists today.

     •     Whether or not those afflicted today have a good chance of surviving the illness with medical treatment.
